Since September 2008, Genetech has received 3 reports f progressive multifocal luekoencephaloathy (PML) related to Raptiva. PML is a serious and almost always fatal viral brain infection. Although Raptiva has been particularly effective for patients with psoriasis, the risks of PML have caused Genetech to withdraw the drug.
Genetech advises that atients not stop treatment with Raptiva without first talking to their doctor. Stopping Raptiva may cause serious side effects, including a worsening of psoriasis.
Patients on Rativa should consult with their doctors regarding alternate therapies as soon as possible. Pharmacies will only refill Raptiva prescritions until Monday June 8, 2009.
