In the August 2009 Journal of the Life Extension Foundation, researchers describe the effects of three different antioxidants on weight loss.
Resveratrol has been found to be one of the key ingredients in the French diet that prevents weight loss regardless of diet. Researchers have found that resveratrol has benefits similar to those of calorie restriction, one of the most powerful anti-aging tools known.Through its action on potent cellular-regulating proteins called sirtuins, resveratrol mimics calorie restriction, stimulating healthy cells to survived and diseased cells to die in an organized fashion.
Animal studies show that the liver-protective supplement curcumin, which is found in turmeric, prevents weight gain, even in mice subjected to high fat diets. In addition, curcumin-treated mice experienced a reduction in vascular endothelial growt factor, indicating reduced angiogenesis, as well as significantly lower microvessel density in adipose tissue.
In an article published in the online journal Nutrition and Metabolism, researchers in Gemany describe how a extract of white tea helps prevent the formation of mature adipose (fat) cells in culture, and also reduces the fat content of these cells. The researchers believe that the high levels of the antioxidant catechins and xanthines present in white tea are responsible for this effect.
