For people with autoimmune disorders, red meat, while a good source of iron and B vitamins, is best eaten in moderation. Red meat is high in saturated fats and arachidonic acid, which promote inflammation.
Inflammation injures joints and contributes to pain in people with fibromyalgia and arthritis. In people with autoimmune thyroid disease, inflammation perpetuates the autoimmune process and contributes to an active disease state.
Other reasons for avoiding meat: Eating less meat may help with weight loss and reduce blood lipid levels. When eating meat or poultry, remember to keep portions modest. The recommended portion of lean meat or poultry should be 5-7 ounces, about the size of a deck of cards.
