How Acupuncture Helps Autoimmune Disease

Acupuncture, like low dose naltrexone, increases endorphins. Endorphins modulate the immune system and promote healing as well as increased wellbeing.

According to the Integrationist Physician Woodson Merrell acupuncture raises and rebalances Qi energy, and works through the nervous system to modulate the immune system. Through this influence on the immune system, acupuncture reduces inflammation and tones down the stress response.

Acupuncture works at both the point the needle is inserted and at a distant location. Similar to the relaxation response, acupuncture lowers sympathetic and raises parasymathetic activity in the autonomic nervous system and balances hormone levels in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis tht governs the nervous systems' response to stress.

Hi,
Yes, massage therapy can also help. A great massage for Graves' disease is acupressure shiatsu since we often have lots of tissue. I've recently been researching neuromuscular therapy, another form of massage that would work well in GD. Take care, Elaine
