CoQ10 levels are notoriously low in hyperthyroidism and contribute to the muscle weakness and fatigue that can occur in this disorder. A recent study published in Neuroendocrinology Letters by researchers in Belgium and Poland shows that CoQ10 levels are also low in patients withy chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), which is known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) in Europe
The study compared CoQ10 levels in 58 patients with CFS to noraml control patients. Compared to the control group, patients with CFS had much lower levels. CFS patients with higher CoQ10 levels had milder symptoms. The study concluded that the low CoQ10 levels in CFS contribute to specific symptoms, including fatigue, autonomic and neurocognitive symptoms.
