A recent report in the December 2008 journal Diabetoligia shows that 300 mg vitamin B1 (thiamine) daily helps reverse early kidney disease in patients with diabetes.
In diabetes, kidney disease is detected early by urine tests for microalbumin. Elevated levels are seen in kidney diseases and urinary tract infections.
In the placebo controlled pilot study of thiamine, Diabetes patients with early signs of kidney disease receiving vitamin B1 showed a decrease in microalbumin levels. Thiamine deficiency is a common finding in alcoholism and leads to much of the damage caused by this disease. While thiamine is found in B complex and multivitamins, vitamin B1 is also sold separately as a dietary supplement.
