Iodine

Hi Elaine,

I was wondering if 12.5 mg of Iodoral could cause my upper eylids to have increased swelling.

I have TED with my Graves Disease and have had swelling around my eyes for two years. But until a couple weeks ago I had not had even near normal levels. After thyroidectomy I think I have been mostly Hypo, so could that cause the additional swelling.

My last levels were TSH 1.794  Free T4 1.01  Free T3 4.4. But even with these pretty normal readings I still feel hypo and my Basal Temp in morning prior to getting out of bed is always in the 94.3 to 95.8 range.

Thank you so much once again,

Elaine

Hi Elaine,

Hypothyroidism causes venous congestion and this can cause eye swelling in puffiness even when TED isn't a problem. Iodine can also trigger autoimmune thyroid disease, so even with your thyroidectomy it can cause increased thyroid antibody production and this can worsen TED.

The usual range for FT3 is 2.3-4.2 so you probably want to make sure FT3 doesn't rise any higher. FT3 is usually better around mid-range whereas FT4 near the high end of the range is usually optimal. Best, Elaine
