An article in the Feb 2009 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition described a study showing that the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentenoic acid (EPA) benefits women suffering from psychological stress. Psychological stress can occur as a cause and as a consequence in various autoimmune disorders. Psychological stress, including depression, can also occur as a result of perimenopause or menopatuse.
The placebo-controlled study of 120 women between the ages of 40 and 55 years was conducted at Laval University. Subjects given EPA improved significantly after 8 weeks of treatment. EPA and DHA supplements also offer benefits in people with cardiovascular disease, have few side effects, and may help in reducing hot flashes.
