Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a condition of microangiopathic hemolyic anemia, thrombocytopenia (low latelet count), and acute renal failure. HUS has been associated with several different autoimmune diseases.
A recent report in Clinical Rheumatology (June, 2009) describes the case of HUS causing pericarditis and pulmonary hemorrhage occurring as a rare manifestation of primary Sjogren's Syndrome. In the case reported pulmonary hemorrhage resulted in fatality and a renal biopsy established the presence of HUS.
