Water Retention

Hi Elaine,

Life has been hell since RAI a year ago.  Sorry...still not over the trauma of it all yet.  I'm now dealing with really bad pools of water under my eyes.  My body is retaining quite a bit as well.  I've finally got my endo to raise my synthroid seeing that my T's were at mid range but the water does not want to go anywhere.  Could you recommend anything for this.  Thanks so much,

jeannie :)

Re: Water Retention

Hi Jeannie,

I'm sorry to hear you're not doing well.

Myxedema (or water-logged) is another word for hypothyroidism. Even though your doctor raised your Synthroid dose, you may also need T3 replacement therapy to help with the fluid retention. Hypothyroidism causes periorbital edema, which means fluid retention around the eyes and eyelids.

Another possibility is the development of TED. This typically occurs up to the first 6 years after RAI although it can develop years later. You might want to see an ophthalologist if raising your thryoid hormone levels doesn't help.

Dietary changes can also help with fluid retention. Drinking more water can help because dehydration can cause you to retain fluids. Avoiding salt and processed foods and any foods you might be allergic to can also help. The herbs Dandelion root and burdock root can also help.

You might also ask your doctor to run a comprehensive metabolic profile, which includes blood tests for kidney function. Since fluid retention can occur when kidney function diminishes, it's good to check this out too just to be on the safe side. Best to you, Elaine
