Elaine, I've been on LDN for 6 weeks now and for the most part I am not having any bad side effects from it. My eye pain and dryness has actually improved and I am able to wear my contacts for a few hours. I have noticed for the past 2 weeks the shins on both of my legs feel achy, burning feeling. It's not bad or constant but definately noticeable. The skin looks fine, no swelling no color changes, does not hurt when I touch the area or anything. I do have mild TED.
Could this be pretibial myxedema or related to the LDN? Could the LDN be causing an increase in my Graves' antibodies? I will be having my antibodies checked in a few weeks. I am so afraid of my antibodies going up. How does pretibial myxedema start/progress? Will pretibial myxedema go away once the antibodies go down? Does this sound like it and how can I stop it? Thank you.

Hi Erin,
It's possible that you have pretibial myxedema although it doesn't cause burning or aching. Usually there's a rash sometimes with brownish lesions and there can be swelling. It primarily affects people who have eye symptoms and it's mostly caused by pro-inflammatory cytokines and thyroid antibodies. LDN decreases thyroid antibody production although if you're exposed to environmental triggers, antibodies can still increase.
Anything that stimulates your immune system including infections, allergies, vaccines, stress, etc. can cause increased thyroid antibody production.
Because thyroid antibodies, like all proteins, stay in your circulation until they're broken down and excreted, you can't expect to see a decrease in thyroid antibodies for 3-6 months. This is why TSI are rarely tested more often than once or twice a year. Best, Elaine
