Hi Elaine,

I wanted to share my lab work since being dx with GD and hospitalized with AF 6 weeks ago. I have been coming up to speed with the help of your book and website, etc.

lab from 3-19-2012- Thyroxine= 11.7 (4.0-12.)

F T3= 5.9 (2.4-4.2) much improved from 6 weeks ago, at that time, 12.9.

With these results, endo decreased PTU (I ended up being allergic to MMI) from 300mg daily to 200mg daily, continuing with Lopressor 50mg daily and baby asa. I have added back some supplements, calcium, vit d, b-12. I remain off of caffeine, alcohol and aerobic exercise, at my cardiologists insistence, putting distance between me and AF.

Overall I have been feeling calmer (yoga is certainly helpful) with mild to moderate fatigue. I am concerned about pretibial myxedema. I traveled last week on a short business training trip, Wed night returing Friday night. In that time I ate processed food in the form of sugar. I walked 2 hours a day to make up for the all the sitting. I could feel my ankles swelling. I came home 4 #'s heavier and today finds me still with bilat. edema, including hands and wrists. Elaine do you think all the walking contributed to the edema? I know I have pretib.myxedema, but I just felt so good walking for so long. I was in Portland and that is a pedestrian friendly city.

Thanks in advance for your help. Your book has been so informative and helpful. I'm a little wary as I approach hypothyroid, but being forewarned is forearmed. Take care, Jeannie

Hi Jeannie,

If you're used to physical activity, i wouldn't expect the 2-hr walks to cause a problem. I'd make sure you're drinking plenty of water to prevent fluid retention. Fluid retention can be caused by hypothyroidism and it could be that your thyroid levels are falling too much. I'd call your doctor and report the swelling in case you need a diuretic.

Take good care, Elaine
