What do you think about my numbers?

Hi, Elaine,

I was wanting to know what you thought about my latest labs.

FT4 .96 range is .59-1.17

T3 free 338 range is 230-420

TSH .03 range is .34-4.82

I am having a lot of eye swelling.  This is the 1st set of labs that my new doc has run for me.  She said I was fine, wanted labs in 3 months and she will see me in a year.  I had my thyroid removed in Nov. and haven't felt 100% yet.  How do my numbers look to you?  Would you wait 3 months for labs?  Is my FT4 moving towards hypo, hyper or perfect?  Thank you for all of your help.

Re: What do you think about my numbers?

Hi Faith,

Are you on any replacement hormone yet? Typically, hypothyroidism develops soon after surgery and after about 6 months the hypothyroidism improves a bit. I can see her point in waiting a few months but if symptoms change you'd want to have labs sooner.  For the first few years after surgery, labs fluctuate so much that annual follow-ups don't seem to be often enough. It would be better if you could have follow-ups every 6 months.

You probably also want to see an ophthalmologist so that you can be evaluated for TED. Your labs look euthyroid or normal based on your FT4, but, since eye swelling can indicate hypothyroidism, it might be good if your FT4 were slightly higher.  Symptoms are always more important than lab results. Best, elaine
