No Ranking

test results

Hi Elaine! Cathy from Illinois again. I have Hashimotos Thyrioditis.I had my internist do more in depth tests and have the results. Currently I am taking 100 mcg of levothyroxine. I was on synthroid originally but the pharmacy started with the generic 3 to 4 years ago. My mom said she noticed a difference when they switched to generic, so since I have been feeling a bit lousy again the doctor told me to try the synthroid again to see if I notice a difference. She said even though my T3 was a bit low she said that wasn't a concern just the T4 they look at and my dosage still within range to keep me at 100mcg. I was in the 3 range for the TSH? But I don't know if I have that below. I might not have gotten that copy. I have also gotten a prescription for Restasis for dry eyes, it helps a little, I have only been using a week now. Well here are my numbers:

T4 Free 1.03, Cortisol 13.2, T3 total .66, thyroglobulin antibody 51-negative, microsomal (TPO) antibody 269-positive, cholesterol total-204, LDL 130, Lupus ratio 1.00, LUPUS INTERP-not detected, APTT-B LUP ANT-31, CARDIOLIPIN antibodies: CARDIO IGG 0.6, CARDIO IGM 4.7, CARDIO IGA 15.2.

My doctor didn't seem it necessary to see a rheumotologist or endo. I am not feeling horrible, she thinks stress is playing a role, I have 2 small kids and went back to work full time because my husband got laid off. I do have an issue with dark spots like blood blisters on my toes since the winter and all her tests are fine, so she wants me to see a vascular doctor. Both her and my chiropractor said I probably have a mild case of Raynauds. I have always had cold hands and feet but this winter I was getting some numbness like frostbite feeling in some toes and fingers. The toes are on a foot that sustained a fracture twice in recent years. Thanks for taking the time to look at these! I feel comforted knowing there are people out there fighting for us to be knowledgable about our conditions that some of these doctors do not take seriously!

Re: test results

Hi Cathy,

A low T3/FT3 isn't desirable. Low FT3 has been linked in numerous studies to higher risk of cardiovascular disease. When thyroid antibodies are present, a TSH higher than 2.0 suggests hypothyroidism. The reference range for T3 is 0.8-1.8 and T3 levels are falsely elevated in women. It would be good to have an FT3 level and add T3 replacement hormone if the FT3 is also low.

I'd like to see the ranges your lab is using for the cardiolipin antibody tests. If your results are higher than the reference range, this would indicate antiphospholipid disease, a condition that's easy to treat once it's been properly diagnosed. Labs use different ranges for this test.

Check on your range for cortisol also. The range varies depending on the time of day your test was drawn.

It's unusual to have a negative thyroglobulin antibody test in Hashimoto's thyroiditis. It could be that you have autoimmune atrophic thyroiditis, which is similar. Best, Elaine
