hairfall

Hello Elaine

These are my labs for 6/19/2009.

TSH-<0.01,,, T4 Free 1.2 (0.9-1.8),,,, T4 8.7(4.5- 10.9).. I take 1/2 PTU 3 times a day , just started taking bugleweed, motherwort and lemonbalm in tincture also 3 times.I started the herbs 2-3 weeks ago.

My doctor will not do any other tests other than T3, T4 and TSH. I had to literally force her to do a FT4. I will be seeing a new doctor next month, maybe I will have better luck. In the mean time I am losing so much hair, I feel very depressed about it, Do you have any suggestions for that . I take most of the vitamins and supplements mentioned in the forums. Eat a healthy meal, don't smoke, red wine on weekends and some exercise like walking, just started yoga yesterday.

Thank you for all yor suggestions

Roan

Re: hairfall

Hi Roan,

Your FT4 is the most important test as it measures the available blood level of your most important hormone. While your FT4 is within range, it's closer to the lower than the higher end of the range. There'd be no problem if your FT4 was as high as 1.8 and you'd probably feel much better. Even with your FT4 falling within range, it can be too low for your body's needs. And that would be the most likely cause of your hair loss. Hair loss is more common in hypothyroidism than hyperthryoidism.

If you're on 75 mg PTU along with herbs your options are lowering the dose of PTU, the herbs or lowering the dose of both. Like a move to 50 mg PTU and herbs once daily. B-complex can help with hair loss so you might want to add a 100 mg B-complex supplement. Best to you, Elaine
