Welcome to The Q&A with Elaine Moore. Questions are answered solely by Elaine Moore, a medical writer and clinical laboratory scientist, MT, CLS, with more than 30 years of experience in immunology. Moore has also authored and edited over a dozen books in the area of health sciences and is an editor for McFarland Publisher's Health Topics Series.

I went back to the integrative doc I've been seeing for several months. Three months ago he decreased my Synthroid from 132/day to 100 and began to slowly add Cytomel. My last labs looked better but I am now extremely hypo and miserable. When I questioned him about it he got mad, closed my file, and left the room. I asked that he come back in but he wouldn't. He wants me to go back to 132/day to see if the symptoms resolve. I can't tolerate an increase like that, that will put me in the ER. It gives me symptoms of headache, nausea/vomiting, tachycardia, dizziness, diarrhea and they don't resolve the more I take it. I asked about Armour but he wouldn't. I'm going to have to return to the endo I saw for 11 years who kept me hypo with Synthroid only and see if she'll try me on Armour. Right now I feel like I have gone to someone who got mad when I questioned my treatment. Why can't I tolerate even a slight increase in Synthroid?

Hi PianoGirl,
An increase to 112 mcg would be more reasonable. if you broke the 132 pill into 1/4, each 1/4 would be 33 mcg. If you took 3/4 and then one i/2 of the last 1/4th pill it would be about 115 mcg. You could consider seeing a general practitioner or osteopath, someone who has a better idea about treating hypothyroidism and takes concerns seriously. take care, elaine
