THE Q & A

Welcome to The Q&A with Elaine Moore. Registered members are invited to ask any question of Elaine Moore on autoimmune diseases, Graves' disease, other thyroid diseases and subconditions, laboratory work, traditional and complementary medicine, triggers and environmental influences, thyroid and immune disorders in pets and animals, and other relevant areas of inquiry.

Each thread represents one question with one answer and will only appear at the time it is answered. Once answered, further replies cannot be made to the same thread since each thread represents only one question. A new thread will need to be started for additional questions.

Questions are answered solely by Elaine Moore, a medical writer and clinical laboratory scientist, MT, CLS, with more than 30 years of experience in immunology. High TPO

Hi Elaine, I always read your replies to posts with interest, and am so grateful to you for all the help you have given me over the years. Recently you sent a reply about high TPO antibody test results, my son who has Addisons Disease, had a blood test for this and they came back high. His thyroid function is all within the normal range. Could this be due to him already having autoimmune condition, or does it mean there is a possibility he will have thyroid problems in the future (I believe Addisons and autoimmune thyroid conditions often come hand in hand)?

I'm still on BR and finally...only 17months later...have they hit on a dose regime that is reasonably ok!

Hi Aldyth,

I'm glad to hear you're on a block and replace dose that's working well and keeping you from becoming hypothyroid. With TPO antibodies, your son could develop an autoimmune thyroid disorder so it's good that his thyroid function is being tested from time to time. Studies show that about 50% of our relatives have thyroid antibodies but most don't go on to develop an autoimmune thyroid disorder. Avoiding environmental triggers can help. You've probably read that selenium supplements can help lower TPO antibody levels.

Hashimoto's occurs more often with Addison's in either one of the polyglandular syndromes or in Schmidt's syndrome. Take care, Elaine
