Without the normal protection of saliva, individuals with Sjogren's syndrome or radiation-induced salivary gland damage (after radioiodine ablation for hyperthyroidism) are susceptible to dental problems.
Keeping the mouth lubricated with sugarless hard candy or using gum containing xylitol (xylitol protects against tooth decay) are just some preventive tips. This month the NIH's feature article is on Sjogren's syndrome and offers other tips including sipping water frequently and using a humidifier. In addition, it's important to watch for medications, both prescription and over-the-counter, that cause mouth dryness as a side effect, exacerbating symptoms.
Sjogren's disease has subtypes, notably a systemic disease with an arthritic component and a localized disorder primarily causing symptoms of dryness.
