Cinnamon for Immune System Health

By Elaine Moore on 5/10/2011

Cinnamon is increasingly gaining recognition for its health benefits. Considered safe and non-toxic, cinnamon is also non-allergenic. Several large studies have previously shown cinnamon's ability to regulate blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol studies. Cinnamon, which is known to mimic the effects of insulin, also improves the uptake of glucose by cells and lowers the dangerous oxidized forms of dietary cholesterol.

More recent studies show that cinnamon has natural antibacterial, anti-tumor, and anti-viral properties. Using natural antibiotics such as cinnamon and curcumin rather than antibiotics, helps strengthen and protect immune system cells. For this reason, cinnamon is increasingly being added to dental hygiene products. In recent years, dental health has been found to be a good indicator of cardiovascular and immune system health.

The spice cinnamon can be added to many foods. In addition dietary supplements containing cinnamon extract powder can also be used. Capsules containing 250-500 mg cinnamon taken with meals are regularly used to help regulate blood sugar levels. As a dental rinse/breath freshener, about 250 mg of cinnamon extract powder may be used up to 4 times a day. Periodontal symptoms typically improve after after several months of regular cinnamon use. 5/10/2011
