Delayed Graves' Ophthalmopathy, NEJM

By Elaine Moore on 5/5/2010

I found an abstract in today's NEJM puzzling in that the authors don't seem to know that TED typically occurs within the first 6 years afer RAI and often right at the 6 year mark.  Interesting anyway to find that their study showed that corticosteroids given before RAI prevent the development of TED for up to 6 months.

This infuriates me! 13 years old and given RAI. Absolute negligence.

Hello Elaine,

I am really interested in reading the abstract however when I click on the link it mentions that the page cannot be found. Perhaps it is not listed on the original web site anymore. Do you have a copy of it that may be able to be reposted please. I tried doing a google search for it with no luck.

I have Graves disease and have had the RAI treatment which was unsuccessful and went on to have a total thyroidectomy. My eye disease has recently worsened and am now wondering if it could be to do with the RAI as it has been around 5 or 6 years now since the RAI treatment.

Hi,
The original abstract from 2010 is no longer available. The study showed that giving corticosteroids before RAI offers protection against TED developing for 6 months. My point is that TED can, and often does, develop years after RAI as TSH receptor antibody titers rise. Protection with steroids is genuine but transient at best. Many doctors object to the use of preventive steroids because of potential side effects.
