I was diagnosed with graves disease about 10 years ago after the birth of my child. I was given PTU for 2 years and my doctor told me I was in remission and did not have to take any further medicine after that point. I was told I had fibromyalgia about 4 years ago. My health has deteriorated rapidly over these past years. I suffer with chronic migraines and pain. I have been seeing an integrative doctor who put me on ldn. It has been about 3 months and I made it up to 3.5mg. This past week however I noticed that after taking it I started to feel very bad. Like my whole nervous system was lit up. Heart racing, palpitations and weakness. Feeling shakey all over, nerves and muscle twitching and terrible head pressure. I feel like I want to crawl out of my skin. I even lowered the dosage to .5mg and it is still affecting me in this way. I was wondering if ldn may be aggravating my graves disease? I am very sad to stop taking it because I feel like it has been helping me with other pain issues but I can't keep going like this. I have heard that it starts to speed up an underactive thyroid so I was wondering since my thyroid is prone to overactivity if it is aggravating it? My body seems to be rejecting Ldn. Thank you for your consideration...

Hi Nicole,

Fibromyalgia is associated with low thyroid hormone levels, and in some cases replacement hormone is used as a therapy. LDN isn't known to increase thyroid hormone levels, but it can lower thyroid antibodies. If you had thyroid antibodies (such as blocking TRAb or thyroglobulin antibodies) that were keeping your thyroid hormone levels low, a reduction in antibodies could cause increased thyroid hormone. But you wouldn't see this effect right after taking your dose. What you're describing sounds more like a sensitivity to the filler used in your pills. Can you ask your doctor or pharmacist about using a compounded formula with a different filler. This usually takes care of the problem. In the meantime, it would be good to have thyroid function tests, FT4, FT3 and TSH to see what your thyroid status currently is. Best, Elaine
