Fatigue is a common symptom in autoimmune disease. Although it may not be a persistent symptom, fatigue tends to occasonally affect most everyone with an autoimmune disorder. Fatigue can make it hard to cope with the emotional and physical aspects of having a chronic illness.
Researchers have been focusing on ways to reduce fatigue, using exercise, energy conservation techniques and nutrient supplements. Regular light exercise programs help the body utilize oxygen more efficiently, preserving oxygen stores. This is especially beneficial in hyperthyroidism. Supplements such as alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10, vitamin B complex, creatine, and rhodiola increase energy and enhance exercise capacity.
Energy conservation techniques are usually taught in sessions with occupational therapists. Ways of conserving energy include:
Daily naps or rest periods
Communicating your rest needs to others
Body mechanics and posture to facilitate proper breathing
Making environmental changes in your home
Separating fatiguing tasks into single components
Setting priorities as well as midlle and longer term goals, and planning activities the day before so that you're prepared for all energy demands.
Incorporating leisure and pleasurable activities into your day, such as 10-minute meditation sessions, walks, and outings.
Preventing adrenal fatigue through natural means such as the use of adaptogens such as Rhodiola rosea.
