Hi Elaine- Thank you for all the great information aggregated in this site. I was diagnosed May 18th with Hyperthyroidism. Prior to the diagnosis I was taking an iodine supplement 12.5mg iodine daily for 3-4 years. Previous blood levels were.
    2012
    T4 Free- 1.1 Range (.8-1.8)
    T3 total 87 Range (76-181)
    TSH 2.26 Range (.4-4.0)

    2015
    T4 Free- 1.1
    T3 total 75
    TSH 1.59

May 1, 2017 my heart started racing i was agitated and sweating all the time. I stopped taking the iodine around May 5th. My resting heart rate was 140 bpm- they took blood and my levels were:

    May 2017
    T4 Free 6.9
    T3 Total 552
    TSH .01

My endo is not certain if it was iodine induced or Graves. He put me on 30 mg of methimazole and 60 mg Propanolol. 3 weeks later my levels were significantly reduced to :
    June 8 2017
    T4 free 3.2
    T3 Total 209
    TSH .01

My AST and ALT had climbed so we cut the does Methimazole to 15mg and 20 mg of propanolol as needed and 3 weeks later all my levels were back in normal range (except the TSH which i have learned will take a while to go back. ) I started to get puffy eyelids around this time.

    July 12 2017
    T4 free 1.1 Range (.8-1.8)
    T3 total 97 Range (76-181)
    TSH .01 Range (.4- 4.0)

The doctor cut my dose of Methimazole to 7.5 mg. which i after 2 weeks i self reduced to 5 mg because i still have puffy eyelids which are really bad in the morning I also had aches in my knee and hip. The past few days i have had trouble sleeping and i still wake up with puffy eyelids and bags under my eyes. I have also noticed my resting heart rate has been increasing to 97-105 bpm. I am taking 20 mg of propanolol each evening .

Do you think i may be going into a relapse because i cut the does of Methimazole? or could i be going hypo. Should i increase the methimazole dose back to 7.5mg? I go back to the endo August 22 with updated blood test. He is also going to test my TSI levels. Thanks again for all your advise.

    Hi,
The guidelines are to use the lowest MMI dose needed to keep FT4 near the High end of the reference range or around 1.7-1.8 regardless of the TSH result. Puffy eyelids (periorbital edema, which is a swelling around the eyes and eyelids) can occur when thyroid hormone levels are too low for the body's needs as this causes a venous congestion.
Iodine can induce Graves' disease and your TSI result will help tell if this is the case. Best to you, Elaine
