Autogenic training is a mind-body approach use to heal chronic pain syndromes and stress-related disorders. Stress is known to trigger and exacerbate symptoms in autoimmune diseases, especially thyroid disorders.
Autogenic training refers to a series of 6 standard exercises along with breathing exercises, imagery techniques and other helpful tips designed to enhance self-regulatory mechanisms for counteracting the effects of stress. The exercises primarily focus on supplying heaviness and warmth to the extremities. The purpose is to elicit a shift from an anxiety state to the autogenic state, which facilitates and movilizes the recuperative and self-normalizing brain mechanisms.
The goals are similar to those of meditation. However, often people are too uptight to hold still long enough to meditate. Autogenic training is a powerful alternative.
